“I would not like to speak to you any longer or waste your effort. If they bring that dance here... I wish I had come with traditional dressing, you would known that I, would have been here, not in this foreign dress but in the natural dress of an Aro, Eze Orbapkor. One typical thing.

“Yes, that’s what I am. I’m an Mazi Obapkor of Arochuckwu and a debeo of the Eze-Cult, Egbe. Which invites me each Christmas to the governors residence in Cross Rivers State.”

Professor Okorafor is the VC of Novena University Ogume. He is a renowned mystic who is also involved with a local campus confraternity, has an affiliation with a traditional cult from his hometown, and was the PD District Grand Master of the Freemasonry Lodge in Arochukwu, Nigeria.

Is The SMS Offering Admission Into Novena University Genuine?

Every year, hundreds of people gets unsolicited text messages informing them that their names has been accepted for admission into Novena University and they should either visit the school for further processing of the admission or in order to write post UTME. 90% of the youths who got this messages have never heard of the school so they come online desperately searching for answers.

Many have wondered if these text messages are genuine but, when they contact the school, the school refuse to acknowledge it publicly.

Are the text messages offering admission into Novena University Ogume genuine?

The short answer to that question is YES under some circumstances. Please read on…

Unlike in UNILAG where the school authorities there disowned and declared such type of text messages as fraudulent; The management of Novena University has adopted the tactics of sending SMS notification of admission to prospective admission seekers. Most of those messages are actually from the university and their are ways of distinguishing the legitimate SMS admission-alerts from the fake once.

How do you differentiate the legitimate SMS admission-offer from the fake once sent by scammers?

If the SMS asked you to visit the school (in person) for post UTME, screening or further processing of the admission offer, then the message is real.

Since its inception, the university have been sending these text message admission alert to hundreds of people each year. However, we live in Nigeria which is notoriously known for internet fraud (aka 419). It is reasonable to conclude that soon or later, scammers might chose to send fake admission offer via SMS, just like they are already doing to prospect of University of Lagos (ironically, Lagos seems to be the world capital for advance-fee scam).

The only way to distinguish the real SMS from the scam is; The ones sent from the school would ask you to visit the Amai Campus in Delta State without requesting for any down payment or deposit (prior to you visiting the school). While those from fraudsters would prefer you call them so they can talk you into giving them money.

How did the school get your contact information?

To those of you seeking admission, receiving a text message like this could feel surreal and divine. You might be wondering how they got your contact information or even knew that the owner of that phone number intended to get into the university this year. This is because Novena University Ogume buys the contact information of candidate who registered for UTME under JAMB. The university’s management seems to target those who choose DELSU as their first or second choice when registering with Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Buying mailing list from JAMB is a multimillion naira business. Some unknown private universities and polytechnics are willing to purchase thousands of contact information (of registered candidates) for hundreds of thousands of naira. It has proven to be effective for those institutions who still practice this unconventional marketing strategy.

This method has exposed the school to people who would have otherwise never thought of attending it. The SMS is a form of publicity campaign that is producing results; otherwise the school could have discontinued the practice a long time ago.

How to get to Novena University Amai Campus

You might be wondering where Novena University is located.

It is at Amai in Delta State. It is NOT in Ogume, neither is it in Kwale (although the proposed Medical School might be built at Kwale, God-willing).

Often times people think the school is situated in Kwale because the schools post office box is at Kwale. Another reason why people (including Google) thinks it is at Kwale is, because the Staff’s secondary school is located at Kwale. So they see the sign post “Novena University Staff School” and assume it is the university itself.

Another reason for the confusion is the fact that the owner of the school registered the name as “Novena University Ogume” (after his hometown), even though it is not at Ogume.

VC's to decide admission cut-off marks for JAMB, July 18th 2024

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and leaders from universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education will meet on July 18, 2024, to set the admission cut-off marks.

Earlier, on April 29, 2024, JAMB released the results for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Out of 1,904,189 candidates, 8,401 scored 300 and above, 77,070 scored 250 and above, 439,974 scored 200 and above, and 1,402,490 scored below 200.

The upcoming meeting, chaired by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, will review these results and discuss key performance indicators from the recent UTME and Direct Entry applications. They will also address issues from past admission processes to set this year's minimum admission scores for universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. This meeting will initiate the admission process for the current year.

HND Holders Must Undergo One-Year Mandatory Training - FG

Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, announced that workers with Higher National Diplomas (HND) must complete a one-year mandatory training before they can be converted from the Executive to Officers cadre. This announcement was made during a virtual session with civil servants, celebrating the 2024 Civil Service Week.

This training aims to address the differences between polytechnic HNDs and university degrees. Despite attempts to eliminate this discrepancy with a bill in 2021, it was not signed into law. As a result, the National Board for Technical Education introduced a one-year top-up program for HND holders to attain bachelor’s degree equivalence.

During the session, Yemi-Esan explained that because the curricula for HND and B.Sc. degrees are not the same, HND graduates need this training to bridge the gap. The discussion also highlighted the ongoing efforts to make education more accessible, inclusive, and relevant to current demands.

She also discussed the implementation of a Performance Management System (PMS) in the Civil Service to improve efficiency. This system includes performance contracts and the tracking of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for all civil servants. The digitalization of work processes is another key part of this transformation, with all personal and policy files now fully digitalized and official communications being processed electronically.

Prank Gone Wrong: How a UNIZIK Graduate's Life Was Cut Short

Ifunanya Miracle, a recent graduate of Quantity Surveying from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, tragically died while trying to escape a prank that turned into a robbery attempt at her school in Awka, Anambra State. Her friend, Peace, who studies Pure and Industrial Chemistry, was also involved and sustained injuries, requiring treatment at a local hospital.

Ifunanya ran a Point-of-Sale (PoS) business on campus and had just closed for the day on June 9, 2024. She and Peace were in a tricycle when another passenger tried to rob them. In their attempt to escape, both jumped out of the moving tricycle. Unfortunately, Ifunanya hit her head and later died from her injuries, while Peace was injured but survived.

A fellow student mentioned that the man who tried to rob them later claimed it was a prank and reportedly turned himself in to the police. The incident has raised concerns about the university's handling of the case, especially since Ifunanya had just graduated.

The university confirmed the incident, stating that it was an expensive prank gone wrong. The families of the victims and the prankster have met with the university, and the prankster will face disciplinary actions after Ifunanya's burial. The university expressed regret over the incident and warned against dangerous pranks.

WAEC to End Paper-Based Examinations

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) in Nigeria plans to gradually phase out paper-based exams. Dr. Amos Dangut, the Head of National Office, announced this after observing the ongoing West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Abeokuta.

WAEC aims to introduce electronic devices for future exams at recognized centers nationwide, which will replace paper registration and help detect exam malpractice. Initially, schools with computer-based testing facilities will use computers, while those without will continue with pen and paper. WAEC will coordinate with the Ministry of Education to set a timeline for this transition.

Dangut noted that the current exam process is satisfactory, with schools and students well-prepared. However, he highlighted the need for larger, better-equipped laboratories in schools. Over 1.8 million candidates are taking the exams across Nigeria.

Mrs. Mariam Oloko, the Permanent Secretary of the Ogun Ministry of Education, mentioned that the state government has started online registration for students in both public and private schools. She assured that the government will continue to upgrade Information Communication Technology (ICT) and other facilities in public schools to better prepare teachers and students.

The monitoring team visited several schools in Abeokuta, including Abeokuta Grammar School, Baptist Girls College, Sacred Heart College, and Charis College.
