The West African Examination Council (WAEC) in Nigeria plans to gradually phase out paper-based exams. Dr. Amos Dangut, the Head of National Office, announced this after observing the ongoing West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Abeokuta.
WAEC aims to introduce electronic devices for future exams at recognized centers nationwide, which will replace paper registration and help detect exam malpractice. Initially, schools with computer-based testing facilities will use computers, while those without will continue with pen and paper. WAEC will coordinate with the Ministry of Education to set a timeline for this transition.
Dangut noted that the current exam process is satisfactory, with schools and students well-prepared. However, he highlighted the need for larger, better-equipped laboratories in schools. Over 1.8 million candidates are taking the exams across Nigeria.
Mrs. Mariam Oloko, the Permanent Secretary of the Ogun Ministry of Education, mentioned that the state government has started online registration for students in both public and private schools. She assured that the government will continue to upgrade Information Communication Technology (ICT) and other facilities in public schools to better prepare teachers and students.
The monitoring team visited several schools in Abeokuta, including Abeokuta Grammar School, Baptist Girls College, Sacred Heart College, and Charis College.
