Delta State University Professor Wanted By The Nigerian Military

Military Declares Professor, Woman, Others Wanted Over Soldiers’ Killing In Delta

In the aftermath of the tragic killing of 17 soldiers in Okuama, Delta state, the Nigerian military has singled out eight individuals suspected of involvement and declared them wanted.

Among those sought by authorities are Professor Ekpekpo Arthur, Andaowei Dennis Bakriri, Akevwru Daniel Omotegbo (known as Amagben), and Akata Malawa David. Additional persons named include Sinclear Oliki, Clement Ikolo Oghenerukeywe, Reuben Baru, and Igoli Ebi.

The soldiers were on a mission to quell clashes between two communities in Delta, according to an army spokesperson.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, acting director of defence information, disclosed that the troops deployed in the Bomadi region were ambushed and killed by community youths on Thursday, March 14. The reinforcement team also faced a fatal assault, resulting in the demise of the Commanding officer, two majors, one captain, and 12 soldiers.

The conflict erupted as a response to a distress call stemming from tensions between the Okuama and Okoloba communities over land disputes.

General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, has ordered an immediate investigation and apprehension of those responsible for the egregious act. While a few arrests have been made, efforts are underway to ascertain the motives behind the attack.

The ongoing clashes between the two communities over land ownership have resulted in multiple casualties in recent weeks.

"Speaking during the burial ceremony of the late personnel, Taoreed Lagbaja, chief of army staff (COAS), said it was “highly demoralising” that the soldiers were killed by those they were equipped to protect.

The army chief added that it took over 72 hours of searching to recover the vital organs of some of the deceased soldiers.

He added that the Nigerian Army exercised “a lot of restraint” in the search for missing arms and body parts of the deceased soldiers.
