Teachers in Oyo donates N450k to man shot in the face by police

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Oyo State Branch, recently donated the sum of N450,000 to a colleague who was hit by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer last year.

Abayomi Olaitan who was the recipient of the cheque, is a teacher at CAC Primary School, Irefin, Ibadan. He was accidentally shot in the face by some police officers who were in hot pursuit of a vehicle that bypassed a checkpoint without stopping. The incident occurred in December 2016 while Olaitan was driving from Agodi Gate to Oje Market.

Olaitan was taken to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, where he has been receiving treatment for the past four months. However, he has been scheduled to be transferred to a UK hospital where the bill is estimated to be about N5million. Being just a primary school teacher, the cost of the treatment is beyond his means as explained by the state NUT chairman, Mr. Oluniyi Akano (who presented the cheque at the union house in Ibadan). He later lamented the trade unions inability to raise the full money (due to the financial struggle they were experiencing) but still vowed to support Olaitan has he goes through his predicament and insure Olaitan would still have a source of livelihood afterwards.

The state Nigeria Labour Congress chairman, Waheed Olojede, who is also the state secretary of NUT, appealed to Governor Abiola Ajimobi, corporate bodies and philanthropists to support Olaitan financially in order to save his life .

If not treated properly, his condition is believed to deteriorate further as he has already lost sight on his right eye.
