JAMB scraps the use of scratch cards

The Registrar and Chief Executive of The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, announced the scrapping of the use of scratch cards for any of its transactions and services. This was made known on the 16th October 2016, in a paper he delivered during a meeting of the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities held in Abuja.

His reason for the injunction was what he described as “archaic”, as per unauthorised individuals had devised ways to bypass the system. He sighted the widespread manipulation of the scratch card system by fraudulent persons and insisted JAMB would henceforth be using the platform of pin vending which was more secured and would checkmate the loophole being exploited by criminals.

Professor Oloyede further explained that;
“The decision is as a result of its consistent subjection to fraudulent practices, the use of scratch cards is archaic and it is the aim of JAMB to also promote accountability in line with government’s zero tolerance for corruption.

“This new system will be accessible through the options of web payment, ATM issued cards (Visa, Verve and MasterCard), online quick teller, ATM payment, quick teller mobile application and Bank Branch case/card.”

While describing the scratch card system as archaic, he also demanded that the Federal Government should revert to the former system where serving vice-chancellors of universities were made chairmen of the Governing Board of JAMB.

He was of the opinion that the current setup has led to acrimony between tertiary institutions and JAMB. He suggested going back to the old practices would “engender good synergies and harmonious relationship with a view to effectively delivering on its mandates”.
